They Told Us... We Say Let's Continue Building Together

A young South African woman looks into the camera and says: "They tell us things are too broken to fix."

This film is our answer.

1910: They told us the power to govern us all belonged only to them.

A closed room, a white pen signing away our future. That was the Union of South Africa - a state built without us. We answered by forming the ANC in 1912.

1956: They told us to know our place.

20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings with bundles of petitions. They said pass laws would confine us. We said "Wathint' Abafazi, Wathint' Imbokodo."

1976: They told us to learn in a language built to keep us small.

Students in school uniforms stood up in Soweto against Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. They were told to be small. They chose to be giants.

1994: They told us our voices wouldn't count for anything.

Madiba smiling, ballot in hand. The first time our mothers and fathers queued to vote. They said it would never happen. We made it happen.

2010: They told us the world would never come here.

2026: Now they tell us things are too broken to fix.

We say: We have never listened to those who say we cannot.

We broke the barriers that kept us apart. We built democracy and brought the promise of a better life into everyday realities.

We acknowledge our shortcomings and must earn your trust through accountable leadership. But we will not surrender our future to those who profit from hopelessness.

Let's continue building better communities... together.
